We love reading and we were so excited to receive lots of lovely books from several amazing authors this year. We think it’s so important to shine a light on the LGBTQ+ community, and all the highs and lows of LGBTQ+ life. Read on to find out more about the various books we are loving right now…
Children’s Books
Erin & Roderick Discover Families by Fliss Goldsmith & Ian R. Ward
This book is all about discovering different types of families, from adoptive parents to same sex parents and so on. It focuses on each family in a constant and repetitive manner, which may work well for some children. The ending focuses on the whole concept of the book, ‘LOVE’, and we think that’s pretty fantastic.
Rainbow Village by Emma Smid
This delightful book seeks to show children (and adults!) what it’s like to be ostracised. It focuses on groups of people who look the same that stick together, never mingling with the other groups, and pushing away any ideas of solidarity. It’s very cleverly written, and I imagine lots of parents would find this a useful tool to discuss diversity.
The Big Book of LGBTQ+ Activities
With interactive stories, colouring in, activities and more, this book is perfect to enjoy with your child. It’s super interactive and engaging, educational and extremely enjoyable too! Buy your copy here.
Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls
This book is so awesome when it comes to featuring real people over the years, and their amazing stories, and including references to sexuality. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is safe and sound on our bookshelf, and will be read for years to come!
Me, My Dad and the End of the Rainbow by Benjamin Dean
This book focuses on Archie, who (with the help of his friends) goes on an adventure to try to help fix whatever is causing his parents to be miserable. We haven’t read this yet, but the praise is completely beyond and it’s amazing to know this LGBTQ+ book exists for children! We can’t wait to start reading…
Books for Adults
In Their Shoes by Jamie Windust
Jamie is just a wonderful human and we’ve had the absolute pleasure to get to know them via Instagram. Their new book, In Their Shoes, is a all about celebrating your identity! This book is witty, thought provoking and full of heart. A total must read!
Gender Explorers by Juno Roche
I remember first seeing Juno on a live video over on Instagram (yes, we live in Instagram haha!). I remember thinking how eloquent they were, and how nice it would be to one day meet them. Well, this book is pretty close eh? This book embodies many stories of young trans people, and it’s so darn heartwarming, we could cry. Juno Roche has collated a gorgeous collection of trans experiences, and it’s really heartwarming to know this book exists!
Sex Ed by Ruby Rare
Ruby Rare is a shining ray of light in our world. Her smile lifts us up, and her sex ed knowledge is pretty darn epic! She owns who she is, and the book is no different. Filled with gorgeous illustrations and tonnes of honest professional advice, this sex ed book for adults is another must-have!
