Last night Zoey and I headed to Wales Millennium Centre to see the long-anticipated SIX! We’ve been so keen to see this performance, and I’ll start off by saying it was absolutely amazing!

SIX focuses on the six wonderfully diverse and interesting women who happened to be married to Henry VIII. We hear their stories through the medium of song, and learn about their lives as real and significant women.

Firstly, I want to say how fabulous it was to see all women on the stage, as well as the crowd’s amazing enthusiasm for this show. From start to finish, the energy on stage and amongst the audience was unbelievable!

SIX is a one part show, full to the brim with energy and passion. You can see the level of love amongst the women as they perform together, volleying jokes back and forth, but always on the cusp of realising they’re better together. Vying for attention, the history books encouraging us to choose our favourite wife. BUT, the performance makes us analyse this thinking. They’re equals, each with their own painful experiences and stories of loss.

The costumes were fantastic, and I loved the little touches, like a mic holder for each performer. The stage didn’t need any crazy props or decor, it worked perfectly and in tune with the essence of the show.

When it comes to the performances, the entire show was faultless. From punchy Lily Allen-esque songs, to sad melodies, SIX has it all. The choreography was stunning, and the lyrics were brilliant, with lots of humour thanks to modern day slang and quirky quips.

We laughed and cried as the stories unfolded before our very eyes. There were raw moments, hilarious moments, sad moments – it has them all. I could relate to the stories, the harsh truths of their lives, and it hurt, but I was also comforted by their words, their truth.

I loved the sense of womanhood, and Zoey couldn’t get enough of the music- we bought a CD afterwards, of course! The ebb and flow of the show was outstanding, the highs and lows managed perfectly throughout, so no dips of blips of boredom ever came our way. We were entertained and enlightened from start to finish!

For me, this performance left me wanting to dig out the history books. I want to learn more about their pain, their stories, THEIR lives. Without the link to the King. Because women are, all too often, overshadowed by men, especially in history. It’s only in the last decade we’ve seen a shift, more books about women, more female leads, and now SIX upon the stage, offering women a voice, a voice that reaches into the heart of the audience and says, ‘Women exist. Women matter. Women have their own stories. Now listen…’

So, book the ticket, go and see the show. And, above all, listen…
