5 Things to Help Ahead of Your Transgender GRS Surgery

Having recently undergone my GRS, here’s 5 things I feel were good to prep for my transgender surgery.
Plenty of Food in Your Cupboards
Making sure your cupboards are full, especially if you are going to be alone any time soon after your surgery is vital. You won’t be able to get around much, and you won’t be able to drive for at least 4-6 weeks.
Tinned food, loo roll, toiletries and snacks to make sure you have all you need is essential. Simple foods that can be easily prepped, like tins and frozen food make it easier so that you don’t need to spend ages chopping and cleaning up afterwards. You will get through an excessive amount of toilet paper whilst you are healing too so make sure you are fully stocked. Try to make sure you have enough essentials to last you about 2 months to ensure you do not need to worry about anything other than healing once you come home.
Entertainment for Hospital
Whilst you are in hospital (and indeed in the few weeks afterwards) you will be laying down for a vast amount of your time. Having things to hand to keep you from losing your mind is important for just after your transgender GRS surgery. Books to read, audiobooks and music to listen to, movies to watch, even colouring books and tools to write and draw will help to keep your brain occupied whilst your body works on getting better. Here’s a few ideas to get you started;
- Inspirational Colouring Book
- Inspirational Audiobook
- Inspirational Notebook
- Drawing Set
- Bluetooth Speaker
- The Transgender Issue by Shon Faye (Paperback)

Something to Provide Comfort
We all have something that brings us comfort and security, whether it’s a blanket, soft toy, or an inanimate object of any other kind, having that one thing to help put you at ease whilst you recover from your transgender GRS surgery can really help. Check out a few of these if you don’t already have something;

Flat Slip On Shoes or Slippers
Although you may get non-slip socks given to you by the hospital, it’s advisable to bring some simple flat slip-on footwear for your recovery as bending down to get anything complicated on will not be fun! Whether you choose slippers, ballerina pumps, sandals or other, having a set of shoes you can just pop your feet into without having to tie anything up after your GRS surgery will make life that little bit easier.

Loose Clothing
Now, you will probably be in hospital gowns for most of your stay, but towards the end, and upon your discharge, you will want some clothing that is loose fitting and comfortable. Your body will be healing after your transgender GRS surgery and it will be sore and swollen. Making sure you don’t have anything tight that will put any undue pressure on areas including any wounds will make your journey home mush more comfortable. Think about dresses, long tees, skirts and loungewear to make sure you can easily remove what you need to when you go to the bathroom too.

Whatever you do to prepare for your transgender GRS surgery, make sure to stay calm and relax. This is a huge moment in your life, and the next page in your wonderful story.
