Things to Consider at Christmas as a Small Business

Christmas is such a stressful time of year for anyone, but for a small business it’s a whole new level of stress! From preparing for markets (online or in real life) to getting ready for the next year, there’s a lot to consider and plan for!

What Should Small Businesses Prepare for at Christmas?

Let’s run through all the things you should consider for the festive period. This will be our second Christmas as a small business, but our first as both fully self-employed, and I’ll be honest, it’s TERYFYING!

But, having had some experience last year, and now being fully in the Christmas moment, we think we can impart some wisdom to help you if you’re just starting out…

  1. Book Ahead

Whatever kind of market you’re keen to take part in, whether online or in real life, make sure you book WAY in advance. From making sure you’ve paid ahead to getting all of your documents and insurance ready, getting ahead will definitely pay off!

Also keep in mind client schedules, as they may differ or become more strained at this time. By asking ‘what is appointment setting?’ even freelancers can ensure the volume of their work is correctly spaced out.

2. Inventory

For us, there are two parts of our inventory to keep track of. Firstly, we need to consider our stock sold on the shop, secondly we need to consider our other items, such as tools, clay, and bespoke packaging. Making sure you’re on top of all of this is essential to maintaining a well ordered and organised business.

3. Set boundaries and stick to them

From last postage day to closing shop to taking some real time off at Christmas, make your decisions, announce them, and stick to them!

4. Budget

Make sure you set aside some Christmas earnings ready for the following year. Small businesses have no idea how it will go in terms of sales, especially during the first few months of a new year. So make sure you set aside some money to help cover any quiet weeks you may have.

5. Plan the next year

Make sure you know what your goals are for the following year. Make sure you have plans for each month, including marketing, making, designing, photography and listings. Yes, there’s so much more, but you get the idea.

6. Find time to rest

It’s super important to find time to rest and have a break from the many million jobs small business owners have to deal with! So relax when you can and learn to listen to your body.

There are many ways to feel prepared for Christmas, these are just a few, and we hope they help you feel more prepared during the busy festive period!

Merry Christmas xx
