How To Prevent Infections In Your Piercings

Infections aren’t common in piercings but they will happen if you’re not looking after your piercings properly. There are simple mistakes that you can make and that could influence whether the piercing is going to heal properly or cause some problems that in some cases, can be pretty serious.

An infection from a piercing can get worse and cause some pretty nasty damage to your body. With that being said, here are some tips to prevent infections in your piercings.

Choose a qualified and experienced piercer

First and foremost, take a good look at all of the body piercers and body piercing studios available locally. This is important because you want to check that the body piercer or studio you choose is reliable.

Look for the proper licensing and make sure the piercer in question is qualified and has plenty of experience. At the same time, you should take a look online to see what people are saying about the body piercer as reviews can certainly be telling on whether they’re the one to go for.

Body piercers will also be able to tell you how to look after the piercing once it’s done. For example, you can find out how long does it take a septum piercing to heal.

Clean the piercing twice a day

In order to make sure you’re doing your due diligence to keep the piercing clean, you should be cleaning the piercing twice a day. Once in the morning when you get up and once in the evening just before you go to bed.

This is something that will help rid the piercing of any dirt and debris that might collect around the piercing as it heals. When you don’t clean the piercing, that’s where you’re more likely to get an infection.

Use a clean paper towel to dry the piercing

Cleaning your piercing with a paper towel is a great way to make sure you’re cleaning it without irritating the piercing further.

Using tissue paper or anything that can break away around the piercing is not worth using as that might irritate the piercing as it heals. A paper towel is a bit more rigid and will be able to rid any dirt and debris without damaging your piercing and what is likely to be sore, around it.

Use warm salty water to soften any crust build-up

When your ears are pierced, you essentially have a healing wound, which is why it’s important to look at bathing this area with warm salty water where required. When there’s a bit of crust build-up and dead skin cells around the piercing, take a bit of salt water to gently break down any of it that’s stuck on or around the piercing.

Be aware of infection signs

As with any piercing, you should pay attention to any signs of infection, however big or small it may be. Be wary of tell-tale signs such as leaking fluid or swollen areas that haven’t gone away after a short period after the piercing has been done.

These tips are going to help prevent infections and keep your piercings safe.
