Transgender Family: Zoey’s Story #transgenderandproud

Hey guys, so January has been very quiet for us as we’ve been adjusting to transgender family life. We’ve spoken openly about everything on social media, but Zoey wanted to write her story in her words and share it with you today on the blog…

This is my story up to now.

So I was born into this world August 4th 1981 and named Warren. A boy. Or so they thought…

Over the years I became more and more disconnected with my body and did not like being a boy, a man in this world. My earliest memories of feeling different were of when I was around eight years old and wanting to play with typically female toys like Barbie’s and My Little Ponies, however I never voiced it because I thought it would be rejected as it was wrong for a boy to like those things.

As I begun going through puberty I felt more of that disconnection, I remember sitting in the garden with my mum crying about how unhappy I was that my arms and legs were getting longer and that my hands and feet were getting too big. It made me feel so upset but I was encouraged that it was normal and everyone goes through it. I still didn’t like it but had to live with it. I didn’t like it.

I pushed it all away for years, but as I started to realise what it was that I wanted and who I wanted to be it became harder. I knew I wanted to be a girl but the world was certainly far from accepting at that point so I pushed it away, again and again and again.

I had relationships as everyone did but never felt truly comfortable in any of them until I met Kelly. She was my other half, my world, my heart. Without her and the love that developed between us I would probably not be here today. We have been married now for little over ten years and they have of course had their ups and downs as every marriage does. The best things to obviously come out of it (aside from our epic love for each other) are George and Molly, they are the greatest children anyone could ever wish for and that is mostly down to Kelly and her amazing skills with them.

After a number of years of dressing as a woman for Rocky Horror or other fancy dress events I began to think even more about my want to be a woman. It began eating away at me and became my dark secret. I wanted it more and more and more and I think it started to worry Kelly. It also started to affect my health, I was doing whatever I could to get the feminine body I so desired. I began wearing a corset type thing, taking weight loss pills, taking herbal remedies to help my hips grow, exercising in such a way to boost my thighs, hips and bum and reduce my waist. I started to seriously reduce my food intake some days not eating for over 24 hours just to lose weight. And it happened, not the right way, but it happened. Kelly was concerned and it nearly pushed us apart. Thankfully our love held us together.

New Year ’s Eve 2018 Kelly sat me down as she knew there was something up and had to get to the bottom of it. Everything spilled out, the day that I had been dying for was finally upon us and I could finally confess everything that had been eroding away at me for so long. I won’t lie, it wasn’t easy and neither were the days that followed. Since that day so much has happened, we have had our ups and downs, tears and cuddles and through it all we are now (I feel) stronger than ever.

We have spoken to and explained to so many people now, we have told all our friends and family and everyone has been amazing. So yesterday (25th January 2019), less than a month after coming out to Kelly, we put shared posts out on Facebook telling the world everything! I have emailed Uni and am due to speak to work next week. We are looking into name change stuff with deed poll which I imagine will also happen next week.

This has been such a crazy month and I imagine there are many more crazy months to come. All I can say is thank you, thank you to Kelly, thank you to the kids, thank you to Kim and my mum and brother. Thank you to everyone else who has shown us the love and support that we’d obviously hoped for but never imagined we’d get. The next few years will be hard, fun, terrifying and exciting all at once and I (we) appreciate all the love and support and hope that we come out at the end of it all stronger, happier and with many happy positive people around us.

Love, hugs….
