Having been out as transgender for 15 months and 9 months on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), I have already tried out many looks with my hair to ‘find myself’. Now I’m feeling more like me and closer to my end goal than ever before, read on to find out about my transgender hair growth journey…

Transgender Hair Growth Journey: MTF HRT 9 Months On

When I came out as transgender, one of the things that concerned me was the length of my hair, along with other hair issues I had been facing. It was pretty short as I had been used to having it shaved for so long and I was concerned it would be another reason for people to mis-gender me.

It really affected me, so after some discussions with Kelly, we decided to try some wigs out. I tried a few different types, and to be honest, in the early days all I wanted t do was try and blend in and not draw any attention to myself.

We ordered a few wigs in different colours and lengths and I settled for a long brown one which we picked up for about £40 on Amazon.

I thought this was a more natural tone for me and was some way to what I aspired for my hair to be like. It also helped give me more confidence whilst I began to figure out how I was going to style myself.

It didn’t take too long however for me to want to let some of my inner colour and craziness out.

I had been gifted a lovely, high quality synthetic red wig from a friend which I had been wanting to try out but not yet had the strength, and I thought to myself that now was the time to embrace it. To be honest I didn’t have much choice as the brown hair wig I had been wearing had matted together and disintegrated after a trip to the pool and I was left without one!

I loved the look of this wig and it soon became part of my image, giving me more confidence again and helping me to get closer to the real me.

Meanwhile, beneath the wig my hair was growing thanks to the HRT, Biotin and other supplements I had been taking to boost hair and nail growth and my daily head pain began to increase.

The reasons for the pain and headaches were firstly my hair was growing and taking up more space inside the wig cap, secondly because of the additional hair and density of the synthetic wig my head was getting overly hot, and thirdly the sheer weight on my head and constant adjustments to how I was having to hold my head were really weighing me down.

I took a plunge at the beginning of March 2020 to go wig-less and get some hair extensions. Now they were not cheap in the slightest, (and I went to a professional, experienced hairdresser which I would always advise!) but I was very keen to have some form of “shield” to protect me if I were to be wig-less going forward. Maybe I would have been better off getting some clip in ones to start with but really wanted it to look, feel and act as much like real hair as possible, hence why I opted for the tape versions.

All was well for some time and I loved the length and the look they gave me, they also helped me to begin to embrace my own hairline which had bothered me for so long.

Unfortunately, I went from one headache to another and after a week or two the extensions started to pull chunks of my hair out. Kelly and I ended up cutting out about 3 or 4 of them before biting the bullet. 7 or 8 weeks in we decided to remove them all and see what my own natural hair was like underneath.

I cried.

I cried so much and so hard.

Fearing no longer having long, feminine locks, I worried that I would have to go back to wearing wigs. I shouldn’t have worried though, Kelly truly looked after me and made me feel so loved. She eased each extension out with some oil based extensions remover, and then gave me a head massage. Kelly ran me a candlelit bath where she sat, calming me down with a glass of wine and then treated my hair.

She’s been following the “curly girl method” with Molly for a while now so she was keen to try it out on me and see what curls lay within my strands! She helped add a little bit of a red colour booster and conditioned the crap out of it, making me feel really pampered and cared for.

So here I am now, in all my curly haired glory thanks to my beautiful wife Kelly taking care of me and helping me nurture my own hair. I didn’t need to be scared, it is much longer than I expected, and although I can’t wait for it to grow more, I can certainly live with how it is. Kelly is helping me make it beautiful and feminine, everything I need right now.

Here’s to curly, natural hair that doesn’t give me headaches and weigh me down!
